8 CUERDAS DUO and THE GAVIRIA & ANDREAS GUITAR DUO
May 15 , 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm UTC+0
STOWE COMMUNITY CHURCH
The soprano and classical guitar duo – Sarah Cullins and Daniel Gaviria – and the nylon & steel string duo – Daniel Gaviria and Franky Andreas – celebrate the guitar and its Spanish roots in classical, traditional Latin American folk, flamenco and Latin jazz repertoire.
Originally from South Carolina, guitarist Franky Andreas has been a fixture of the Burlington music community since 2002. In addition to his new venture in Latin American music with the Gaviria & Andreas Guitar Duo, he has played in several rock outfits, including The Metal Band Amadis and Brave the Vertigo. Franky has been a guitar instructor at the Burlington Music Dojo since its opening in 2013, drawing on his own versatility to teach electric guitar, acoustic guitar and ukulele in a variety of styles. Previously he designed and implemented youth programs at Burlington’s 242 Main teen center and was a guitar instructor at Advance Music. Franky currently provides the guitar for Vermont singer/songwriter Andriana Chobot.
Soprano Sarah Cullins returned to her native Vermont in 2013 after enjoying a 10-year musical adventure in Bogotá, Colombia, and soon formed the 8 Cuerdas duo with her husband, Daniel Gaviria, as a way to bring Latin American music and culture to North American audiences. Winner of the Colombian National Voice Competition in 2003, Sarah subsequently built an exciting career coast to coast, performing with the country’s prominent orchestras and opera companies in theaters and festivals nation-wide. Back in Vermont, Sarah has been a featured soloist with a plethora of vocal and instrumental groups, including the Opera Company of Middlebury (with whom she has sung 5 roles), the Vermont Youth Orchestra, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Oriana Singers, the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Vermont Philharmonic, the Burlington Choral Society, the Vermont Mozart Festival, Vermont Virtuosi, the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, and last year made her debut with Albany Pro Musica. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and Tufts University, Sarah also studied at Mannes College of Music in NYC. She maintains a busy private voice studio at Patchen Music Studios and is the founder and director of the Youth Opera Workshop of Vermont, in collaboration with the Middlebury Community Music Center.
Colombian guitarist, arranger and educator, Daniel Gaviria, left the Andes Mountains for the Green Mountains of Vermont in 2013. He has quickly built an active career in classical solo guitar and Latin Jazz, has enjoyed trying his hand at a plethora of new instruments for musical theater productions, such as ukulele, banjo and mandolin, frequently concertizes with his wife, Sarah Cullins, in their Latin American and Spanish duo 8 Cuerdas, and with Franky Andreas in the Gaviria & Andreas Guitar Duo, and regularly collaborates with local singer/songwriters Cynthia Braren and Marcie Hernandez. He has also performed with the Burlington Chamber Orchestra, Turn Music, Onion River Chorus, and Ray Vega’s Latin Jazz band, Son de los Montes. While studying classical guitar at the Central University in Bogota, his musicality and virtuosic playing brought him national acclaim as the winner of several competitions, garnering prizes such as concert tours as well as an invitation to participate in the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes in 2008. Daniel is a certified Suzuki-method guitar teacher of all ages and holds an Arts Administration post-graduate degree from the Universidad del Rosario in Bogota. www.danielgaviria.net
